Dr Bryan Duggan has been teaching computer science and game development in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) for 15 years.
His courses encourage students to learn, discover and express themselves through creative coding. He is the AI developer for DEEP, a meditative and psychoactive virtual reality experience designed to relieve anxiety. He has won several awards including a national teaching hero award (2014), the best presentation at the International Computer Music Conference (2009) and in 2010 he won the best overall invention in DIT for developing Tunepal, a query-by-playing search engine for traditional melodies that is used by over 30,000 traditional musicians around the world.
In his spare time, he enjoys yoga, meditation, running, clubbing and playing traditional Irish music on the wooden flute.
Alan’s other area of work is as a trainer, coach and professional speaker, working globally. He is a keen mountaineer, powerboat skipper and golfer and has a reputation for insight, inspiration and for saying things others don’t dare to.
In this talk, Dr Bryan Duggan will explore the psychedelic experience from the perspective of Timothy Leary, Terrance McKenna, Alan Watts, Psychedelic Science and others. Further, he will show how how aspects of the psychedelic experience can be conveyed through immersive virtual reality by providing beautiful, psychedelic inspired, consciousness expanding experiences to the player.
He will discuss several VR projects inspired by psychedelic consciousness and culture and reflect on his own journey programming creatures in DEEP. Set in a beautiful, fantasy underwater environment, DEEP is a meditative and psychoactive virtual reality experience that encourages mindful, deep yoga breathing in order to help relieve anxiety.
